Rideau River (Taylor Park)
What a good day on the water did we have during the SEBO tournament on Saturday. My original partner fell sick, so I called another buddy of mine. Darryl Medaglia. Darryl and I fished the SEBO Big Rideau tournament last month and we had a good time.
Darryl was a little cold after we made our run from Taylor Park to the Kemptville area. The day was overcast and temperatures in the 8 – 10 degrees. Clam winds which made for a pretty good fall day of fishing.
We started the day throwing spinnerbaits and some top water. The spinnerbaits paid off if you were looking for pike. It seemed that the only way to catch the bass was to move out to a little deeper water 6- 8 foot of water. Due to the low light conditions I was throwing a ½ booyah black and blue single black Colorado blade spinnerbait. Darryl was throwing some zara spooks along with some senko style baits.
We continued up the river to fish another spot that is usually productive for me and we started down this one shoreline where there is a section of it that has about 4-6 laydowns in this 1section. I started throwing green pumpkin tiki- stick Texas style but because I wanted them to fall faster than fishing them weightless, I added a 1/16 oz finesse worm slip sinker. This gave the bait a little faster fall and that’s what the bass seemed to like. The 4th cast under this laydown is when I caught the 3 + pounder and brought him into the live well. We continued working this section of shoreline until about mid afternoon, and then we went back to where we started this morning and fish the outer weed line in about 10 - 13 foot of water.
We caught about 12 - 15 keeper size bass all day. All in all it was good day fishing and the company was great as well. We brought in 11.85 lbs for 5 fish. Our biggest being 3+ pounds.
I think that the weights would have been higher if the cold front didn’t come in Friday. However, any time you can get out fishing is a good time.
