Cayuga Lake June 26, 2005

This months stop on the BASS weekend series Northeast division was in Seneca Falls New York. A beautiful clear water lake. One of the finger lakes in upper New York.

Arrived early Wednesday evening. Got all settled in the hotel and ready to get started on trying to figure out the elusive bass that roam this giant lake. Thursday morning we head out on the lake. Not much wind but because the lake is so long and so deep (in the south end) it doesn't take long for big rollers to establish who is the boss of the lake. We decided to fish the weedline(s) near and around Frontenac Island. Tony had fished an American Bass Anglers tournament on this body of water the previous weekend and this is where the lunker of the tournament was caught, so we thought that it was a good place to start. Perhaps catch some on here and try to establish a pattern so that we can catch others. Well, Thursday was probably the worse day that I have had on the water in recent memory. We caught nothing nor did we see anything. Back to the hotel and back to the map.

Friday the weather was the same in the morning. We went up the creek on the North end of the lake. There are plenty of great looking areas to fish in that creek. However, the farther up the creek we went the muddier and muddier the water became. We say fish on the and around the riprap and the train trestle so we left the area with the hopes that no one would see us spending too much time there. As the day went on the wind died down completely and the heat kicked into high gear. Decided to take a little run down to the south end and start fishing major points long the way down. Stopped at this 1 point. It goes from 4 foot to 40 foot in about 20 feet. Nice rocky bottom, so logically you assume smallmouth. We threw the usual....tubes, crankbaits, worms, grubs but we couldn't get anything to bite. Moved to another point down the lake and the same scenario. As 5:00 was starting to set in we decided to call it the day and head back to the hotel. Not a stellar day on the water for sure but we did end up finding fish.

Saturday it was suppose to be extremely hot and humid, so we decided to only pre-fish the morning and be off of the water shortly after noon. We did just that and once again we didn't catch a single fish with the exception of a hammer handle pike...sorry chain pickerel.

Since my pre-fish was absolutely terrible and with no patterns remotely developed I decided to go where I knew there were fish. By 11:45 AM we both had 3 keepers in the box. We caught about 15-17 bass all day. All were just too small. The only type of bait that seemed to work was a 4 inch finesse worm on a 1/16th oz. mojo weight. After a long hot day on the water I weighed in 3 fish at 4.13 lbs to finish 100 out of 127. Needless to say that this is the worse tournament result that I have ever had in my short career and I hope that it will remain that way. However, if it was easy everyone would be doing it and that's why it's called fishing and not catching.

This weekend (July2nd) I have the first event in the Bass Anglers Association series out of Kars on The Rideau River. Let's hope that this drought of mine ends and we can get back to be a contender in the following events. The next BASS event is the following weekend July10th out of Clayton NY on the St. Lawrence River.

Until my next journal entry, may all of your hooks be sharp and your live wells full ( of fish and not just water). :-)
