Lake Champlain
This week we head out to Ticonderoga New York for the 4th stop of the ESPN Bassmaster Weekend Series Northeast division tournament trail to fish the popular Lake Champlain. This is the first time that I have ever been on this body of water and let me assure you that it is quite the body of water. The lake runs North/South, so when the wind picks up from either direction, it doesn’t take long for a nice calm day on the water to turning into a scene from the “Perfect Storm”
I had 3 days to prefish for this tournament and I was hoping to do well in this tournament because I needed a good weight to move up in the final season standings to try and qualify for the regionals at the end of October on Kerr Reservoir in North Carolina.
Pre-fishing was a little slow for me on the Thursday. It was over cast conditions and I was only able to come up with 1 keeper bass. It was caught on a craw coloured flippin jig and trailer. On the Friday I decided to flip a little shallower into the water chestnuts in the Southern end of the lake. I had a better day but still not enough size to make an impact in the tournament or the standings.
Saturday, day before the tournament, I went out to try some new water north of Ticonderoga. I again was able to find some fish but 12 inch keepers is all. I was hoping to draw a late start in the morning because I found that the later on in the day it was the better the bite was. Saturday night, I get my partner and boat number and it was boat number 2. The tournament hours were 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
Sunday morning launched nice and early. Got all of my tackle ready the night before and we were relaxing before the event started. Unfortunately, I played guide all day and as not able to land a keeper size bass. My non boater caught his limit of 3 bass. All in all, I was disappointment, frustrated and angry.
