Mississippi Lake
Bass Anglers Association event 2 was this past weekend in Carleton Place on the beautiful Mississippi Lake. The weather hot, hazy and of course humid. I was pretty confident about this event because I went out pre-fishing on Wednesday evening after work and I caught a personal best for this lake. It was a 4 lbs 13 oz largemouth. During the 3.5 hours of pre-fishing, caught about 10 lbs for a 4 bass limit.
Water temperature was extremely high, in the high 80’s and in some areas is was in the low 90’s. I went back to the spots that I caught bass during my pre-fish and there was nothing. The water depth that I was fishing at was in the 3 to 8 foot range. There was nothing, no bait fish, no perch, bluegill nothing. I decided to try tight to cover and went into a back creek that usually holds fish and I didn’t even get a pickup. As the morning went on I was starting to get worried that this was one of those nightmare tournaments that I was having. I started moving out to some deeper water. I finally started catching fish but no keepers.
It was approaching 2:00 and I only had 2 hours left to catch some keepers. I decided to go into a bay that usually will produce some keeper size bass. I pulled into the bay and a couple of casts later I caught my first keeper. I looked at my watch and it was 2:00. I finally found fish, now I just had to figure out what then wanted. I took a green pumpkin 5” tiki-stick and dipped the tip in chartreuse dye. A few more casts working the outside edge of a rice patch I caught my second keeper. No size but at least I was going to weigh in some fish. Then I thought that I would try a different bait but keeping with the senko type bait. I switched tiki-stick colours and went with a green pumpkin/chartreuse in a swirl pattern. This turned out to be the bait that would allow me to catch a total of 5 keepers all day weighing in just over 6 lbs. A very tough day on the water and the heat and humidity didn’t help in anyway.
Looking forward to the next event in this series, White Lake on July 30th launching out of Waba. This lake has been good to me in the past and it also has left me high and dry. Let’s hope that things will turn around and we can get back on track.
Take Care,
