Rideau River (Taylor Park)
South Eastern Bass Open was the event of choice on Sunday. This would be the first time that I would be fishing with my partner from last year. So far this season I have been fishing alone. My fishing partner is my wife. Unfortunately for her, the first tournament that she does this season turns out to be raining and miserable. However, like the trooper that she is, she gets her rain suit on and says “let’s go fishing”
We arrive and register at Taylor Park and we are boat number 43 of 49 boats. We take off down the river to our favourite spot and we start fishing the weed line in 3 to 5 foot of water. Throwing a 3/8 oz spinnerbait in a fire tiger pattern. We caught 2 keepers just over the 2 lbs weight. We left there to continue up the river to fish another bay and creek channel. We end up catching our limit in this spot using both spinner baits (like mentioned above) along with 5” tiki-sticks in various colours but mostly black/blue flake and green pumpkin with a tail dipped in red dye.
My wife catches this one bass in some heavy weeds and slop. At first she thought that she was stuck. Once she realized that weeds didn’t pull back she starts to fight it. She gets it out of one clump of weeds but the bass goes directly for the next clump and wraps her up real tight. We go in after the bass and as I take the net to scoop it up along comes about 10 lbs of weeds. It was nice to see her fight this fish. I think it was the hardest thing she has ever had to do when fishing.
All in all it was a good day. We caught lots of bass and even more pike. I think if it was a pike tournament we would have won. However, in a bass tournament they don’t count. We just never got the big bite that we needed. We weighed in a 5 fish limit for 12.63 lbs. The winning weight was over 15 lbs. It was nice having my partner (my wife) back doing a tournament with me. I hope that we can do a few more before the end of this season.
Take Care,
