St. Lawrence River (Morrisburg) July 2, 06
Well, with much anticipation on our part my partner (Darrell Medaglia) and I are up at 4:00 AM and on the road by 4:30 to go to our first Renegade Bass tournament. We are off to the St. Lawrence out of Morrisburg. We had a decent pre fish the previous Friday however, today the weather was different.
We get registered and launched. Boat number 66 and we are waiting patiently as 1 after the other boats leave to go to their fishing spots. Finally, the tournament director calls out our number and we are off heading west down the river. With 3 foot waves from the high winds we skip along down the river. Passing a few of the slower boats…like ocean freighters etc we get to our first spot.
We get to our spot around 7:35 AM. A little cover around an island out of the wind for the most part, which make boat control a little easier. Darrell starts catching smallmouth after smallmouth. We have 2 in the boat by 9:00. Nothing big but we are working on our limit of 5 bass. We go down this shoreline casting into about 1 foot of water and reeling out to 8-12 feet of water. Finally by 10:37 we have 5 keeper smallmouth in the livewell. All 5 keepers were caught on Tiki sticks, by Wave Worms and Booyah counter strike spinnerbaits.
We decide around 11:15 to move to other locations down the river to see if we can’t catch that elusive kicker bass that you want so that you can start culling your smaller bass. Unfortunately, we didn’t go back to our pre-fish locations because we didn’t think that we could stay on the points with the wind blowing as it was. Unfortunately, we made the mistake of not trying. Instead we went and looked for some covered bays. Those were the only 5 bites that we got all day.
Our final weight was 10.32 lbs enough for 58 out of 75 teams. Winning weight was over 17 lbs. Not a great result and a little disappointed about our performance, we head home and try to figure out what decisions we made throughout the day that we either should have or should not have done.
Now we start thinking about the next stop in the Renegade Bass series Muskrat Lake in Cobden. We have some work ahead of us if we want to qualify for the classic but our confidence is still up and with some hard work and a little luck we will make it.
See you on the water.
