White Lake Bass Anglers Association July 2, 06
This is the second event on the Bass Anglers Association 2006 schedule however this is my first event with the club this season. We were launching out at the Waba Museum launch. Clear blue sky, not much cloud action. The water level was about 1.5 to 2 feet higher than normal. I assumed that the bass would be tight to cover seeing as how the water levels were so high.
We blast off and I go to my usual first hole. Third cast into the tournament and I’ve got a strike. It turns outs to be too short to keep. After fishing this location for approximately an hour, I decided to hit a location that I know has some great cover. I start fishing this laydown which starts out on the shore and tree top is in about 14 feet of water. I started fishing the tree top and by the time I made my way to the heart of the laydown is when the action started. I threw in my black Power Slug and I let it fall, then a hit. I set the hook and the rod didn’t move. I knew that it was a good one. I get it to the boat and it’s a 4 pounder. Not bad for my first fish of the day. I continue along this area were there are a couple other laydowns. I get 2 more keepers in about 20 yard stretch of shoreline.
I hit more locations that have laydowns and I continue to catch fish. I’m starting to cull the smaller bass by noon time. Then I go for 3 hours without a strike. I decide to move around the lake and look for more laydowns that have deep water near by. At 3:15 I get this pick up. I set the hook and once again I can feel that this is a big bass. I get it to the boat and flip it in. This bass turned out to be heaviest bass of the tournament of 5 lbs 3 oz. After I calm myself down releasing my smallest 2.2 lbs largemouth I start saying to myself….wouldn’t it be nice to cull this last 2+ pounder. It’s 3:45 PM and I have to be back to the launch by 4:00 PM. I figure I have a couple more casts before I have to pack up and head in for the weigh in. All of a sudden I get another hit. Turns out it weighed in a little over 3 lbs and I was able to cull my last 2+ lbs bass.
I arrive at the weigh in with 1 minute to spare. I bring my 4 fish limit to the scales and it reads 14 lbs 15 oz. My biggest fish is 5 lbs 3 oz. Good enough for first place and big fish, a wonderful feeling and a great way to end a perfect day on the water.
The next Bass Anglers Association event is on July 22nd in Merrickville on the Rideau River. Perhaps with a little luck we can have another good showing.
See you on the water.
