Rideau River, Merrickville

The third event in Bass Anglers Association series out on the Rideau River in Merrickville was a tough fish for me. The weather was overcast and the bass were not where I was hoping they would be. I caught my first bass in 2 consecutive casts in about 8 foot of water using a red shad Berkley Power slug. The first one was my largest at 3.02 lbs. I spent the rest of the day running from spot to spot to try and complete my 4 fish limit.

The time was going by quickly and at 3:30 I still only had 2 fish in the live well. I thought to myself that this was it. For the first time in my 3 year BAA career that was going to be the first regular season event that I don’t bring in a limit. However, I never gave up and I got my third keeper. With about 25 minutes of fishing time left before I had to make my way to the launch site I continued casting. Finally, at 3:47 I got my 4 th keeper and my limit. I knew that the weight was going to be low however, I still caught my limit.

I take off towards the launch to weigh in my huge bag of fish of 8.00 lbs even. I’ve always said that every time that you go out on the water you should try to learn something that will help you improve as an angler…well this day was no exception. I learned a couple of things and the first thing that I learned is to never give up. It only takes 1 bite to make the difference between coming in empty handed or cashing a cheque. Unfortunately, in this case I didn’t cash a cheque but I didn’t come in empty handed either. The other thing that I learned is if you leave an area that isn’t producing for you, don’t go to another part of the lake/river and fish the same structure/cover. Move on to something completely different. You just might be surprised what you will find.

Next event is on Clayton Lake out of Beaton’s camp ground. Looking forward to this tournament, although I have never fished bass on this body of water before I am told that there are some monster bass in there. Hopefully, I can turn the momentum around and come out with a better performance.

See you on the water. Remember, fish hard take lots of pictures and take a kid fishing.
