Big Rideau Lake, August 12/06

Stop number 4 on the Renegade Bass Circuit was the event I was looking forward to the most. My home lake, a lake that I am familiar with, a lake that I have never won on and a lake that I want to win on.

We were launching out of Safari Marina in Rideau Ferry. The day was cool as a cold front came through over night. Water temps dropped, although it was going to warm up during the day. During pre fish the week before we caught about 18 lbs for our best 5 fish which we thought was going to be good enough to possibly cash us a cheque and move us up in the standings.

We went to our first spot and within the first hour we had 3 fish in the live well and 1 of them, a smallmouth was a 3 pounder. We figured that the day was going according to plan. However, the bite died down so we decided to leave the lower Rideau and head up to the Big Rideau. We went to spots that normally produce for us but we came up empty. We hit about 5 other spots and finally around 2:00 we landed our 5th fish for our limit.

We went back to our first spot from the morning because it was there that our better fish were caught during pre fish. We were able to catch a couple more but nothing big enough to cull our small 1+ lbs fish that we had in the live well.

We were the last flight to weigh in and we weighed in 11.54 lbs for 5 fish. Good enough for 35th place. We didn’t lose any positions in the overall standings but we didn’t make any ground up either. This was a tournament that I thought we would do well in. It was an opportunity for us to gain some ground and we didn’t. In fishing as well as life you are given certain opportunities and it’s up to you to capitalize on this. We didn’t and hopefully, this doesn’t bite us later on.

The next tournament is on August 26th in Carleton Place on Mississippi Lake. We are going to give it our best shot and lord willing we will qualify for the classic. See you on the water, and if you can bring a child to Mississippi Lake town launch in Carleton Place on the August 26th for the Renegade Bass Kids Tournament. There will be prizes for all the kids.
