The Kalamazoo Kid now known as KVD is in the record books once again. First tying Rick Clunn for most Bass Master Classic victories with 4, 20th BASS tournament win, winning over 5 million dollars and the most weight brought to the scale at a Classic event with 69 lbs 11 oz. Aaron Martens once again finishes 2nd to KVD with a great tournament weighing in 59 lbs over 3 days.

Vandam has won the Toyota Tundra Bass Master Angler of the Year the past 2 years as well as the Bass Master Classic the past 2 years. This bring to question when it come to big events is KVD beatable? Is the rest of the field fishing for second if Vandam is in the field. I guess we will see what the Bass Master Elite series season will play out and by the end of summer we will find out if Kevin Vandam will win his 3rd consecutive TTBAOY .

When we think of big bags of bass we think California, Texas, Mexico and of course Florida. When we think of bass lakes that produce big bags we think lake Clear, lake Fork, Amistad, El Salto, Lake Toho and the Big O. Okeechobee in Clewiston Florida. Big O did not disappoint for the opener of the FLW Tour season opener.

We an angler bring 20 lbs to the scale you can say that you have had a great day. However, on this tournament 20 lbs will put you in 50th place. You end up going back to the hotel and scratch your head and say…what is it going to take to win. Right now the leader Chad Prough has the answer sitting with an opening weight of 35 lbs 3 oz. Check out the full story at http://www.flwoutdoors.com/bassfishing/flw/tournament/2011/6554/lake-okeechobee-headline-story/151881/okeechobee-on-fire/

The 2011 B.A.S.S season has finally started this week with the BASS Southern Open on Lake Toho in Kissimmee, Florida. The Opens is a stepping stone where anglers try to qualify for the BASS Elite Series as well as try to qualify for the prestigious Bass Master Classic. This event saw 2 firsts for a couple of big name anglers’ in their careers.
First Roland Martin “The Great American Fisherman” returns to professional bass tournaments in 5 years. Roland did not disappoint with a first day weight of 18 lbs. good enough for 8th place. Rolans was catching his fish with Carolina rigs over deep water however; the larger bass were caught with lipless crankbaits along the edges of weedlines.
The 2nd first that happened in this event came from the winner of the event Gerald “G-Man” Swindle. G-man is the most successful angler to never have won an event. He finally got that monkey off his back with a wire to wire win. Winning with a 3 day weight totaling 80-13 lbs for his first ever BASS win. Like Martin, Swindle caught most of his bass on lipless crankbaits in deeper water. The win has qualified Swindle for the 2012 Classic as long as he fishes all 3 Southern Open events for his qualification to hold up.
Having fished with Swindle back in 2004 as a co angler on the Santee Cooper Reservoir on day 1 of the Citgo Bass Master Tour event I can attest to his professionalism and his ability to catch fish when the going is tough. His professionalism and kindness impressed me after day 2 of the event. He came to see me after the weigh in on day 2 to see how I had done. He was genuine and shook man hand to congratulate me for cashing a cheque on my first BASS event. 2004 G-Man won Angler of the Year and it was nice to see a nice guy win this title. Congrats G-Man and hopefully this is a sign of what 2011 will bring to you.

The weather starts getting cooler, the leaves start changing colours and then most people start thinking about putting the boats away and getting ready for ice fishing. Well, the fall time is a great time of year to catch some monster bass. Both small and largemouth are active and are strapping on the feed bag for the long winter months. One of my favourite lakes in Eastern Ontario is Big Rideau Lake.

Big Rideau Lake is part of the Rideau system which runs from Ottawa all the way to Kingston. The section that I’m talking about in this system is between Portland and Smiths Falls. These past two weekends (Oct 16th & 23rd) I was out, the sun was shining, the lake was calm and the bass didn’t disappoint. We were fishing in 25- 40 feet of water using Okuma Trio spinning reel spooled with 8 lbs P-Line fluorocarbon on 6’9”” Med light action Okuma Concept C3 drop shot rod. The technique of choice is a drop shot. Using a Strike Zone slammer on ½ oz pencil weights with a 1/0 Mustad Ultra Point Demon circle hook made it possible to catch fish like these.

Water temperatures are in the mid to low 50s right now making the smallmouth rather aggressive. In a matter of 4 hours we landed over 20 decent size smallmouth. The majority of the smallmouths were coming off rocks with little to no weed cover what so ever. As we were using our drop shots you can feel the bottom and the minute that we found weeds the bite would stop. We would continue around the rock hump and you can feel only the bottom the bass were there. Using a heavy drop shot weight, in our case ½ oz it helped us to keep that weight on the bottom to feel the contours of the structure we were fishing. The key to a successful drop shot was for the weight to have constant contact with the bottom. You didn’t want to hop that weight along. We wanted to only move the bait and not the weight. When we were able to do that, along with being away from the weeds is when the action got hot.

However, smallmouths are not the only bass that are getting ready for the winter. Largemouth bass are feeding as well. This one was caught on a 4” Berkley Jigger Craw on a 3/8 oz shakey head.

The 3 lbs largemouth came from 20 feet of water just off a deep weed line. Once again finesse fishing is what used to catch this one. The slow subtle fall of the bait is what trigger this one the bite. Also, this time of year the largemouth will be cruising the shallows. If you can find some weeds, pads etc. don’t be afraid to get in there with a frog or flipping jig to try and get those largemouth out of cover.
